V-i-c-t-o-r-y!

Yes, friends, we did win the spelling bee last week. Apparently I've still got it! We beat the doctors, bankers, lawyers, writers for the local newspaper, even the nuns. One writer (on the team who was eliminated) penned an editorial in which I was described as a "ringer." I'd rather be a secret weapon, but I'll take it. My teammates helped, too--both of them had at least a couple of words that were on the lists that they studied. The winning words? Menehune (I forget the definition) and then avgolemono (a Greek lemon/chicken/rice soup). The pronouncer wasn't the best and neither were the sentences he read, but we got through it anyway. All in all, we had a great time and the event raised over $7000 for the charity. It's just too bad that there weren't any home school parents there to beat...it always rankled me that the home schooled kids did well in the spelling bees when I was young. After all, they could spend as long as they wanted each day just studying the words.

Forgive the lack of specific names here--I don't want my students to be able to Google me and find this blog. How can I complain about them if they are reading it? :-)
