My geek is hanging out

One of the teachers came in this morning and told me he'd read something interesting. Apparently, someone was holding a spelling bee for adults. (He already knew what a spelling nerd I am.)

Turns out a local charity is hosting this event as a fundraiser--it's a team spelling challenge and there's an entrance fee ($300). I didn't think it was really possible...but I really wanted to do it. Because I'm a dweeb. So I started talking about it to people.

I told my friend Cindy, who assumed when I said "adult spelling bee" that it was a bee with "adults-only" words. I would type here the word she spelled, but I don't want to pop up when people Google it. I laughed so hard I thought I'd wet my pants.

I told the people at lunch, who thought it was a great idea. I talked to the principal and have her full approval. Now we'll see who's interested, and start raising funds. Shouldn't be too hard, really...would kids contribute to their teachers in the spelling bee??

Yes, I know my geek is hanging out. I'll try to tuck it back in again.

Birthday surprise

So here are my excuses for not posting recently:
1. Very busy. We just finished a trimester.
2. I've been sick off and on since January. Just starting another cold cycle.
3. My motivation is low, probably due to alternating sickness and poor weather.

Anyway, I did have a nice birthday on Monday. We went out to my favorite restaurant in town--it's gourmet/continental style, amazing food. They have beautiful presentation and everything tastes so good. We had an incredible meal. I had venison, Derek had shark. At the end of the meal, the waitress said, "It's all been taken care of, have a great night." We must have looked like total idiots! We started to leave, asking ourselves what could have happened. The wife of one of the owners works at my school and I had asked her what was good on the menu right now, so I thought she might have mentioned something to her husband. The waitress came up to us as we were leaving and said, "You guys looked so shocked! Your dad called and took care of the bill for you." What a great birthday surprise! Thanks, Dad.

My mom is coming to visit on Saturday--she is taking the train. One more week of school and then it's spring break--finally! We are going to New Mexico to visit my grandparents, who couldn't make it to the wedding. It will be so wonderful to go somewhere warm and sunny for a change.
